Best Free Responsive WordPress Portfolio Themes
1. Gridly
Gridly is a beautiful, minimal free responsive portfolio theme, perfect for photographers, designers and artists who want to showcase their work. The highlight of the theme is, undoubtedly and unsurprisingly, the grid, which is powered by jQuery Masonry. Anyone who’s read more than a few of my other theme reviews will know that I am the world’s biggest sucker for such a layout, which may go some way towards explaining my fond feelings for Gridly. For those of you don’t spend hours dissecting WordPress themes, a Masonry layout is one where the floating grid elements are arranged vertically and positioned so that there are no gaps between the elements, even if they are of differing heights. The Gridly front page offers a well-done example.
Other features include:
- a widgetized footer
- ability to upload your own logo
- 2 color schemes
- featured images (the images you see on the home and category archive pages are featured images which you set when you write your posts)
Be aware that there is currently no support for the theme. So you may need to hire help, if you need it. Or you can always try your luck posting in general WordPress support forums. But as the theme is so simple to setup, you shouldn’t need a lot of help.
2. Unique
Unique is a clean theme with a modern look and feel that can be used for both showcasing your work and blogging. In my opinion Unique isn’t quite as well put together as Gridly (above), but it’s still a sound option. Unique does have a home page slider, unlike Gridly. Unique also makes use of an infinite scoll type feature, whereby you can load more posts without having to re-load the page. The last thing worth mentioning is that Unique’s footer is widgetized, so you can drop whatever information you like in there without difficulty. If you do choose Unique, be sure to check out Marius’s (he’s the theme author) video where he talks through the theme’s features and how to use it.
