4. Slide

slide-theme

Slide, by Themify, is a responsive WordPress theme for photographers. The home page features a responsive slider and, unusually, little else. There is a little button on the slider that, when pressed, loads the slider in full screen mode. The portfolio page is a joy to use, partly thanks to the ability to filter the images by category without reloading the page. There are a ton of blog page templates. I count 18 in all. The 3 main ones are full width, left sidebar and right bar. There is no custom contact form, but arguably you don’t need one when you can simply use, as Themify suggest, the free Contact Form 7, which automatically integrates with the theme’s styling. There are shortcodes for buttons, columns and more. Slide comes with 7 different coloured skins.

6. Artboard

Artboard

Artboard, by MDNW, is a responsive full screen portfolio and blog theme for photographers, graphic designers and illustrators. On the home page you’ll find a massive responsive slider, one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. The theme is feature-rich and includes all the customization options you should need to make your site your own. So if you want to change the body font, you can choose from over 40 Google web fonts, for example. There are 14 shortcodes, including some I’ve never seen bundled with a theme before. So you have shortcodes for displaying related posts, for example, and Google charts and more. Although there are shortcodes for arranging your content in columns, there are none for buttons. If you download this theme and discover you need some buttons, I can recommend the free plugin MaxButtons (premium version available, the main benefit of which would seem to me to be the extended font choices). Every Artboard page can have its own custom background. As well as showcasing your illustrative material in a slider, you can do so using a much simpler image gallery:

If you plan to do a spot of blogging, Artboard comes with blog page templates, including full width.

7. Uber

Uber

Uber, by Theme Trust, is a responsive portfolio theme for photographers and designers alike. It is a supremely clean theme, without a detail out of place. One very cool feature of the home page is that you can synchronize the slider image with the page background. I recommend you check out the demo to see for yourself. The portfolio page features animated filtering effects – also very (could I even say uber?) cool.

Additional features include:

  • custom widgets for Flickr and Twitter

  • a blog page template and a full width template

  • button and column shortcodes

  • support for Google web fonts.
